Off the western coast of British Columbia, Vancouver Island is a nature lover’s paradise. Habitats include rugged coasts, serene beaches, marshes, mudflats, rivers and lakes, dense forest and alpine meadows. Birders come to see species like brant geese, trumpeter swans and bald eagles as well as a vast array of marine birds, shore birds and song birds. The spring and fall migrations boast a swell in the number of species that can be spotted with favourite hotspots including Somenos Marsh Wildlife Refuge (Duncan), Courtenay River Estuary, Pacific Northwest Raptors, Swan Lake (Victoria), Esquimalt Lagoon (near Victoria), and Goldstream Provincial Park (near Victoria).
